Location: Kansas, Alabama

This block began in the hands of Heather Petermann, sent to her in April of 2021 while she tended her 10 yo daughter who was in the hospital in critical condition due to MIS-C. For those who don’t know, MIS-C is an inflammatory response that can happen, usually in children, after having a COVID-19 infection (they had it in March, deemed it mild). It can cause inflammation of organs like your heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, etc, and if not treated, death. to Thankfully, they were told to seek medical attention quickly, and were accurately diagnosed and treated in a timely fashion. With good medical care, she was able to recover. Whales are her favorite animal.

Then, in November of that year, her father-in-law and her husband’s grandmother were both hospitalized with severe COVID-19 infections. Gwendolyn Debben “Grandma Dee” passed on November 27, 2021, just a few months short of her 93rd birthday.

Marlin managed to fight the virus for a few weeks, even recovering enough to come home for a few days. Unfortunately, he fell ill with secondary pneumonia, and had to return and be fully intubated. Due to lungs damaged by the coronavirus, he died on Dec 22, 2021. He worked for the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District for 47 years. From the department’s announcement:

Marlin had an important job that directly impacted each of us and our communities on many levels, especially public safety. A most recent example is the flood of 2019. Marlin, his team, and our various emergency management partners made critical decisions before, during, and after the flood that not only helped minimized the immediate destruction, but quickly put in motion strategies that would further reduce damage to vital infrastructure and communities, such as Offutt Air Force Base and the City of Bellevue.

His work directly supported my (Heather Schulte) hometown community. Margot Glenboski (my mother) completed the block that Heather (Petermann) started. This block is dedicated to the lives and in memoriam of Grandma Dee and Marlin.
